PLAN: Creating a Culture of #Reuse on Campus

We're thrilled to support organizations that share our passion for #reuse. PLAN (Post-Landfill Action Network) is non-profit founded by Alex, a young visionary and Yerdler. Here's his story:

Five years ago, at the end of my freshman year at the University of New Hampshire, I was moving out of my dorm and into an apartment off campus. On my way out the door, I saw a futon sticking out of a dumpster. Thinking that maybe I could salvage it for my new place, I hopped in to grab it, and what I found inside was shocking. The dumpster was FULL of usable stuff – not just furniture but clothing, dinnerware, decorations, textbooks, electronics, food and much more! Later that summer, we discovered that on my campus we were landfilling roughly 80 tons of usable materials every move-out season.
So my Sophomore year my friends and I started a program called “Trash 2 Treasure”. We fund-raised start-up expenses, set up drop-off locations, and organized groups of volunteers to collect all the useable stuff students were discarding, stored and cleaned everything over the summer, and then held a giant yard sale during move-in weekend. In our first year, we made back enough revenue to run the program again the following year, and we created the first student-led self-sustaining program of its’ kind in the country.
In 2013, I founded the Post-Landfill Action Network, a nonprofit network of student leaders on campuses across the country working towards zero waste. In the past two years, we’ve supported over 40 campuses with the development of move-out initiatives and zero waste programs. Along the way, we’ve been fortunate enough to connect with the team at Yerdle and we are excited to promote the Yerdle service and community to our network of students.
Last week we launched an IndieGoGo with the goal of raising $10,000 to build a digital platform for students to connect with each other; share resources, troubleshoot program logistics, and inspire campus zero waste success. If you have a minute, please check out our video and consider donating to support student leaders working towards zero waste. All donations will be matched by Yerdle: Get one Yerdle dollar in your account for every dollar donated to PLAN!
