Get ready for the mother of all money-saving months! This year, August hosts both National Garage Sale and National Thrift Shop Days.
We all know the merits of shopping used by now. It reduces tons of landfill waste, saves money, and prevents finite resources from being used to constantly pump out new goods. But shopping used wasn’t always so widely accepted, and still has a long way to go before being mainstream.
At the beginning of the 20th century buying previously worn clothing was very uncommon. Cultural norms of the time suggested used items, especially garments, were somehow unwholesome. Capitalism and evolving norms have quickly created an entire industry that 1 in every 5 Americans participates in. Plus, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that this industry will grow 20% over the next decade.
What does all this mean? Scoring amazing second hand items at a steal will only get easier, but we have to continue bringing thrift shopping into the mainstream. So encourage your friends, compliment them on their finds, and bring them along!
We obviously want to encourage everyone to use Yerdle - but the most important thing is to keep usable things out of the landfill. So Yerdle it up, check out your local thrift store, or find a garage sale in your neighborhood.
